Danny Boyle’s National Theatre production of FRANKENSTEIN, a new play by Nick Dear based on Mary Shelley’s novel, was filmed twice for NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE. to allow cinemagoers to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. Throughout the run of FRANKENSTEIN at the National Theatre, the two main actors – Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller – are alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature on the NT stage.  The duality and transformation is an integral part of the process and thinking behind the production.  The versions are not exactly the same – the script remains the same but the staging and interpretations of the characters change depending on who is playing the roles.  The run of performances at the National in London have sold out quickly and many people have booked to see both versions.  We are thrilled to be offering both at Amherst Cinema.   Version One of the play with Jonny Lee Miller as Victor and Benedict Cumberbatch as the creature will be presented on July 14th.  Version two, with the roles reversed, will be presented on July 30th.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker.  Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
This play contains themes of an adult nature.  Recommended for viewers 15 and older!
