Jen Malkowski, Associate Professor of Film & Media Studies at Smith College, joins us to present "Reckoning with Trans Representation, Past and Present."

This Cinema Seminar starts at 7:00pm, followed by a screening of DISCLOSURE at 8:00pm.

About the seminar:

In a live seminar, Smith College professor Jen Malkowski (they/them) will speak about DISCLOSURE and its ambitious project of documenting the history and current moment of trans representation in film and television.

Malkowski’s seminar will reveal what a fraught task director Sam Feder undertook in making this film, and comment on his tremendous ethical successes in approaching a screen history filled with disregard for actual trans people. How does DISCLOSUREmanage to balance the traumas of trans representation with its—often unexpected, and not exclusively recent—joys? Who was this film made for, and how does it address itself to that (and other) audience(s) clearly?

DISCLOSURE's successes range from its casting, to its subtle details of cinematography and editing, to its behind-the-scenes hiring and labor practices, to its place within a longer lineage of documentaries about how marginalized communities have been represented on screen—all of which Malkowski will detail.

About the film:

DISCLOSURE is an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender. Leading trans thinkers and creatives, including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton, and Chaz Bono, share their reactions and resistance to some of Hollywood’s most beloved moments.
