From Silents to Talkies: SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

In a live Zoom seminar, local filmmaker and film expert Nina Kleinberg tells the stories behind Hollywood's most beloved musical

From 1926 to 1930, Hollywood experienced a cataclysmic change with the advent of "talking pictures." Everything was reinvented—lights, cameras, film scores, sound effects, the very language of film. Silent stars lost their careers, and new stars were born. After a difficult rebirth, the movies emerged as the dominant art form in America during the 1930s and 40s.

In 1951, writers Betty Comden and Adolph Green were given a simple assignment: take the collected songs of Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown and turn them into a musical for MGM. Comden later recalled, "It was gonna be called SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, so we knew there'd have to be a scene where someone would be singing and it would be raining."

Taking a cue from the most turbulent time in film history, Comden and Green set their story at that moment when the movies learned to talk.

With stills and clips, many from rare early films, Nina Kleinberg tells us how it really happened. (And, no, it didn't all start with THE JAZZ SINGER!)

Nina will also tell us about the people who made the film and how movie musicals are really filmed.

Many of you know Nina from her appearances at Amherst Cinema, including her 2015 series Film School in 90 Minutes, her 2016 series Out of this World on 1950s science fiction, her 2019 series Print the Legend on classic Westerns, or her Science on Screen presentation on SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. If you missed this hit presentation in our theater, this is your chance to catch it online and connect with fellow film fans from home.
